Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution: Aquaculture Center for Training, Education and Demonstration (ACTED) ACTED offers a training strategy that combines education with industry experience. Training hatcheries and raceways operate using recirculating technology. Facilities are plumbed with saltwater and freshwater systems for culturing commercially important warm water species of molluscs, crustaceans, and finfish. Extensive industry contacts assure links between applied research and commercial production and marketing. Experience International Experience International is a not-for-profit training organization designated by the U.S. State Department to sponsor a J1 Exchange Visitor Program. This program brings foreign nationals to the United States for the purpose of practical training and on-the-job work experience in agriculture, forestry, horticulture, fisheries, environmental education, parks, recreation, and related fields. HBOI & EI have pooled their resources and work in cooperation to provide international students and professionals with unique opportunities for short and long term career enhancement in aquaculture. |

All training programs are individualized. Applicants are encouraged to carefully consider what would be the optimal combination of aquaculture coursework and practical experience. Below are several additional notes to consider. |
|
|---|---|
| Long Term Training Programs | Both short and long term training programs combine practical work experience with theory. However, it is the long term option that provides participants with significant, real-life opportunities for quality work experience and on-the-job training.
The Long Term Training Program provides a rich combination of experience/theory at HBOI followed by extended work experience (application to real life situations) at state-of-the-art commercial aquacultural operations. EI and HBOI will work with each applicant qualified for the program, to design the best possible combination of experiences between HBOI and the private sector. |
| Extension of Program | Qualified participants may extend their initial program once in the US to gain additional practical experience and training at HBOI or, alternatively, at a commercial operation in one of the Southern States. Extensions may be made up to a maximum of 18 months, are made at the sole discretion of EI, and are approved based on:
|
| Elegibility to receive Wages | J1 Visa holders in the 'trainee' category (all individuals sponsored by EI), with prior approval of EI, may receive wages and stipends during their training program.
Short Term participants are not eligible for this option. However, if they extend their program, this may be an option and would be determined at the time of extension. Long Term participants will in most all cases, receive either a stipend or full wage. This will be determined at the time of application when we design the applicant's individualized training plan. Long term participants should keep in mind that during the practical work experience portion of their program:
|
| Dependents (spouses and children) |
Legally married spouses, as well as their children, may, with prior approval, accompany the program participant to the US. Spouses and children enter the US on a J2 visa. As long as the J1 Participant maintains legal status in the US, the J2 is also legal. There is a one time $200 document fee.
For additional information on J2 Accompanying Spouses, please contact EI. |
| J1 Visa Requirements | EI is the official sponsor of each participant in the program.
The J1 Exchange Visitor Visa is a unique visa, with special requirements. It is a training visa, not a work visa. It must be clearly understood that all participants sponsored to the US:
